to call yourself a southern boy
would disgrace an entire culture
of heavy lidded city dreamers--
you carried no accent,
no taste of dandelions,
no big skies,
you were not baked
under an unwinking
yellow country eye.
i wanted to call you fraud
when your beaked mouth
reached my thick sugary
city split lips,
i wanted you returned
to your homely texas bluff.
