Play Your Cards Right

Ace, two, three
SLAP
"Whoever has the most, wins"
and he deals me in.
Draw,
knees a kiss apart,
six, seven,
decks a-trembling
go on for an unblinking
eight or nine, ten
too long for strangers
familiar like magnets.
A Jack falls from his sleeve,
me with a Queen in line,
I reach for the pile,
and his hand goes crashing
into mine.
I slide my prize ten cards,
"A bounty," he chides
and it's my deal.
Ace, two, three
he strikes with speed,
Ace, two,
a SLAP
too soon.
Our fire is fueling the room
And we play on
giddy and breathless
counting up and round
competing for contact,
a blushing win.
