it started with coffee with almond milk
as he stole glances at my chest,
talking leisurely of revolution,
awful mustaches, the 23 bus,
he walked me to the 57
then came the "wish you were heres"
and emoticons,
giddy each time the phone trembled.
i bought a dress on sale, pants for $4.50.
evening provoked drinks too sweet,
uncle bob kept my glass full,
my feet throbbed, i was statue-esque
and for once, eye level
exchanging kisses with strangers,
my hand flapping loosely from my wrist
and i smiled
wide for every camera's flash.
i tried not to think
where the old one was,
how the new one would be,
if a new year will be any different
as they're all ushered in on alcohol's crutch
and empty promises
disappointing none but ourselves
come spring.
